Baby Food and the State

Via an excellent piece on surrogate motherhood by Devangshu Datta, I discover that it is illegal to advertise baby food in India. Devangshu mentioned in conversation that this is because our government wants to promote breastfeeding in India. It assumes that all of us, parents and potential parents, are too stupid to decide what’s good for us, and do not have the right over our own bodies and our children to take such decisions. The government, mai-baap of all us mai-baaps, must tell us what to do.

Someday, I hope, we grow up.
