I’m just back from dinner with a few friends of mine, among them Anand Ramachandran<\/a> and Salil Tripathi<\/a>. They shared a couple of superb anecdotes that, with their permission, I’m reproducing here. The first is about when Anand’s dad, in the good old days when ISD calls cost a bomb and you had to scream into the phone, was spelling out ‘America’ to a friend.<\/p>\n The Friend<\/b>: What did you say? Can you spell it out?<\/p>\n Anand’s Dad<\/b>: America, da. A for Apple…<\/p>\n The Friend<\/b>: A for Apple.<\/p>\n Anand’s Dad<\/b>: M for Mother…<\/p>\n The Friend<\/b>: What, what? M for what?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n At this point, Salil told us a story about how he<\/i> had to spell his name out for somebody.<\/p>\n Salil<\/b>: My name is Salil Tripathi.<\/p>\n Somebody<\/b>: Sorry? How do you spell that?<\/p>\n Salil<\/b>: Salil. S for Singapore…<\/p>\n Somebody<\/b>: How do you spell Singapore?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The possibilities are endless, you will note.<\/p>\n Update<\/b>: Reader Seshagiri Sattiraju writes in:<\/p>\n I faced the opposite situation.
