(This is different from the Man Booker Prize, in that it&#8217;s not given for a single novel, and is akin to the Nobel Prize.) Literature isn&#8217;t a horse race, but if I was forced at gunpoint to name who I consider the greatest writer alive, I&#8217;d pick Munro. Indeed, if she wrote nothing else but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/archive\/1999\/12\/27\/1999_12_27_110_TNY_LIBRY_000019900?currentPage=all\" title=\"The Bear Came Over The Mountain -- Alice Munro\">this story<\/a>, I&#8217;d pick Munro.
